For those of you who have been friends with me for a while, you know about my dog Sara and that she passed away last March. We have since gotten a new dog, same breed (sheltie), his name is Damon. For the past two or three months he has been excessively shaking his head off & on, so being the overly cautious dog owners my family is, we decided to take him to the vet. On our first visit they said it was nothing and gave us some drops to put in his ears. We have been doing that for several weeks and he still has episodes of head shaking, so we decided to take him a second time, today.

This time we were told that he might have a seizure disorder because that's one of the symptoms apparently. She also said that "fly biting" (biting at the air) is another possible symptom, which my dog happens to do at times. Okay, now I'm panicking! We are supposed to keep a log for the next week with the dates and number of times he does these specific things and then go from there. I'm completely depressed right now. I don't know how to handle this news. I always think the worst. Has anyone else who has a dog experienced any of these things? If I hadn't gone through such a traumatic incident with Sara I probably wouldn't be so concerned now. Please pray for my dog, guys, that he does not have any kind of seizure disorder. I just can't bear anything more happening to someone I love! :`(

actually, my dog (witch is, by the way, like the one you have on your icon) did both of the things you listed, the head-shaking and the "fly biting". He even sometimes looked really scared and jumpy (I used to say that he was "seeing dead people"). he stopped the air-biting and jumpy-phase, but he still shakes his head a lot.
Hope your dog is well, mine gave me a few scary weeks in january <3

Nothing was wrong with your dog though, doing those things? I just can't believe he's got a seizure disorder, it makes no sense. All dogs shake their heads etc. I hope your baby is okay now! *hugs*

I had two dogs die slowly of bad arthritis when I was a kid. They were golden retrievers that was rescued from abusive families and it was a genetic thing.

A lot of dogs have seizure disorders, esp connected with breeding. But most respond to medication.

I hope your dog is ok and it grows out of it.

I'm sorry about your dogs with arthritis, that's such an awful thing to watch them go through! *hugs*

They did mention meds, if it comes to that, I just hope it doesn't.

Thanks for your support, it means a lot. =)

Awww. I'm sorry. Our beagle just got back from the vet (she'd been there about a week) and it turns out her cervix, bladder, and bowels had "somehow" adhered together and the vet covered the entire cost for her second operation...which leads me to believe that the "somehow" had something to do with a needle and thread he wielded...

Oh, I hope your beagle will be okay, that sounds very upsetting!

Oh sweety I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I know how much one can love a pet. But I can't help you. I haven't had a dog since I was a 10 year old girl. :( But I'll keep you in my thoughts and hope for the best - for both of you.

Thanks so much, I appreciate you keeping us your thoughts! *hugs*

Awww Kristen, I'm so sorry. I can't relate i the same circumstances, but i can relate somewhat. I've had a dog put to sleep before due to old age. And my dog now gave us a scare a year and a half ago and we thought we might lose her. But the vet took great care of her and let pay with a postdated check and everything. But she's fine now. She does have a sensitive stomach, but we just have to be careful what we feed her. I did pray for you, your family and your dog. I truly believe God cares about our animals. After all He made them for us. :) Just trust Him and He won't let you down. :) ****hugs****

I'm sorry you had to put your dog to sleep, that's always such a traumatic thing to have to go through! I'm glad your dog now is doing well and healthy. My Sara had a very sensitive stomach as well, so I can definitely relate. Thanks for your prayers and kind words. *hugs back*

Fingers crossed for your doggie, let´s hope it´s nothing serious.
Gwah, those pets really are like our children, aren´t they - you just fall to pieces if something is wrong with them.

Thank you, I appreciate your thoughts. Pets are definitely like children, I worry SO much all the time!

Oh I'm so sorry for you, a sick animal is so heartbreaking. Always remember that your love and affection is what they need most, that's what makes them happy. So don't worry, and what ever happens, I'm sure your puppy is blessed with an owner like you.
Kristin: Elephantkristypadalecki on March 24th, 2009 04:18 pm (UTC)
Hopefully it's nothing as serious as a seizure disorder. I definitely love and care for Damon, he knows how much I adore him! Thank you so much for your thoughtful & kind words, you are such a good friend. *hugs*

I'm really so sorry to hear this. I hope everything turns out to be okay.

The online friend I mentioned at Twitter? She's a member of a certain Yahoo group I'm subscribed to that's basically a support group for LP (a condition my Jesper had). She also had a sheltie (with LP) that had a seizure disorder. I believe she breeds shelties. Anyway, I was thinking that if Damon ends up getting this diagnosis confirmed, she could probably give you tons of advice regarding the meds and other things. I could ask her if it's okay to give her email address to you, if that's what you want. Just let me know. *hugs*

Thanks Mervi, I appreciate it!

That is so sweet of you to offer the counsel of your friend. I will certainly let you know if things get to that point and then, certainly, you could forward her e-mail to me. *hugs back*
